AWG-LCA approves accord proposal

It will pass along the Conference of the Parts for its approval

The Ad Hoc Working Group on Long-Term Cooperative Action under the Convention (AWG-LCA) approved draft agreement submitted hours earlier by the Presidency of the Conference of the Parties (COP) during an informal meeting.

Margaret Mukahanana-Sangarwe, President of the AWG-LCA, moderated a discussion on the positions of various nations, who in general supported the measure as a first step toward the construction of a binding agreement post-2012.

“This text is not perfect, actually, but the proposed text gives us a number of positive measures", said the delegate of Gabon during the meeting held at dawn on Saturday.

Pablo Solon, chief of the Bolivian delegation, said that Bolivia disagreed with the draft document because the level intended to stabilize the planet’s temperature over the next century is too high. Solon had expressed a similar position at an informal COP meeting late on Friday.

At the end of the meeting, Christiana Figueres, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), acknowledged and thanked President Mukahanana for her efforts during the COP16/CMP6.
