Realistic expectations for Cancun

Ambition, Kyoto Protocol and science are important for COP16 success

Ambition level, future of the Kyoto Protocol and the scientific evolution were the main issues discussed this morning by the Mexican delegation during a press conference at the Sun room in the Moon Palace, venue for the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Cancun, Mexico.

“This is a process that will last many years, that is why we have to give substantial, concrete and ambitious steps in Cancun, so the process can develop,” said Mexican special representative for climate change, Ambassador Luis Alfonso de Alba Góngora.

The ambassador also pointed out that “Kyoto is a complex topic, but no country is against its continuity.”

Regarding technology, he reiterated that “the importance of supporting development countries is essential to help reducing the greenhouse effect gases emissions and with this, help everybody so we won’t suffer the effects of climate change”.

The Mexican official finished by saying that the Mexican delegates met with the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America (ALBA), where they concurred in reaching concrete agreements so Cancun can be the point of reference for future COPs to reach realistic and ambitious commitments.
