Presidents of Mexico and South Africa meet

Both countries close bilateral relations

Felipe Calderón Hinojosa, President of Mexico, met with his counterpart from South Africa, Jacob Zuma, and reported that the bilateral relationship was strengthened with this first visit of a South African head of state to Mexico.

The President of Mexico stressed that South Africa has been an example of struggle and perseverance against adverse conditions. He acknowledged the role played in combating Climate Change, setting an example for developing countries.

Both countries belong to the G20 and G5, which creates common interests. Mexico is the third largest customer for South Africa, after Brazil and Argentina, and the African nation is the bridge to the rest of their continent. Mexico will seek to strengthen economic and trade ties, as well as technical, scientific and educational cooperation between the two countries.

For his part, the President of South Africa thanked the hospitality offered by the Mexican government and confirmed that the relationship has deepened. He invited the President of Mexico to visit his country in 2011 to continue the bilateral dialogue and gave the Mexican people a painting that will be delivered through diplomatic channels.

He said his country's presence in Cancun has been invaluable, and said they cannot lose the opportunity to ensure the progress of negotiations and implementation of actions to combat Climate Change.
