Dialogues with State Leaders at the COP16

If we fail to slow down carbon emissions, the island States can be covered under the water, said the President of Mexico Felipe Calderón Hinojosa, adding that Climate Change “is a matter of life or death."

The table Dialogues with State Leaders: Keeping our ambition against Climate Change in the long term, chaired by the President of Mexico, was attended by representatives of Bolivia, Central African Republic, Guyana, Republic of Kiribati, Nauru, Norway, Samoa and South Africa as well as the President of the World Bank, Robert Zoellick, and General Secretary of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), José Ángel Gurría.

The President the World Bank, Robert Zoellick, said that it is important to keep investing in technology and development to mitigate carbon emissions, while the General Secretary of the OECD highlighted the importance of private sector participation.

In the high level table moderated by President Calderon, he expressed the need to reduce emissions so that global warming does not rise up to one and a half percent, "hopefully we get from one to zero," he said.

"Lets act now, because no one deserves, nor is it possible, that we give the perfect excuse to those who do not want to contribute to this," Calderon explained.
